Independent Drug Testing and Forensic Services has analyzed ballistics in a homicide case where a Chinese AK47 was used and aided a local police department in their case. By the determination of the rifling (the marks on a projectile) and by the lands and groves will provide proof – or elimination – of a weapon. If a suspected weapon is found, it can be compared to a crime scene projectile by the use of a comparison microscope and photographed for courtroom evidence. The characteristics of a projectile are unique as fingerprints to a particular weapon by which caliber and manufacturer can be determined. This greatly assists law enforcement in their investigations. Projectiles from a suspected weapon are recovered in a variety of media including sand, water, gel, and a variety of ballistic chambers designed to capture a near perfect projectile for comparison.
